The recent federal mandate compelling countless Catholic agencies to supply artificial contraception to employees has stoked one of the strongest unified reactions among U.S. Bishops in recent memory. Most of the public debate has centered on issues of “religious freedom,” which is understandable since the mandate violates it. On the other hand, why does the Church teach what it does on contraception in the first place?
The talk will explore the way a “contraceptive mentality” has been behind much of the collapse in sexual morality in recent decades, and then unpack the biblical, theological and philosophical underpinnings of the Church’s teaching on artificial contraception. The history of the Church’s teaching, the shape of the modern debates, and a positive vision of human sexuality rooted in Scripture and Tradition, will all be presented.
